Heartstone Update 1.2: The Overhaul Update
August 27th, 2025
Happy day, everyone! Update 1.2 is live!
Since release, I've wanted to bring The Crystal Caverns up to a more modern standard. My goal with this game has been to deliver a unique narrative RPG experience while honoring the legacy of text-based adventure games. Today, I'm uploading a massive overhaul that rebuilds the entire front-end from scratch. Not only that, I am adding a ton of quality of life features and an expansion to the world map. There is a lot to cover so let's get right into it!
What's New:
The New UI: No More Wall of Text
The biggest visible change is the UI. The old single stream terminal display is gone, replaced by a modern, multi-panel layout. The goal here is simple: give you the information you need, when you need it, without having to ask.
- Narrative Panel: This is your main view, a scrolling log of room descriptions, combat, and action results.
- Sidebar Panels: Your Character stats, Inventory, Spells, and current Location are now always visible. They update in real-time after every action, so you always know your current state.
Note: There also is a better mobile experience, but it needs to be updated upon.
Customize Your View: The Theme Switcher
I know everyone has different preferences for readability, so I've added a theme switcher in the bottom-left corner. Your choice is saved automatically.
- Fantasy Theme: The new default. A clean, modern dark theme with a classic fantasy feel.
- Crystal Theme: A high-magic vibe with a palette of blues and magentas.
- Classic Theme: For those who liked the old-school look. This brings back the glowing green CRT text and a pixelated font, complete with scanlines.
Quality of Life Upgrades
Playing the game should feel smooth, whether you're clicking, typing, or reading.
- Clickable Text: You can now click on items, exits, and people directly in the narrative text to interact with them. It's a faster way to play and great for discovering what you can do in a room (although the
examinecommand hides the real secrets). - UI Feedback: The Inventory panel flashes when you pick up a new item. It’s small stuff, but it makes the game feel more responsive.
- Dialogue Improvements: Some characters now have more in-depth dialogue paths. Important characters that lead to information or areas opening up will be more sequential. I also rewrote some sections to connect more clearly to the lore that is being built up.
A Bigger World to Explore
Finally, this update isn't just cosmetic. I've expanded the playable world itself and added more items and monsters.
A new major area has been added: Turtle Lake. It's an explorable zone where you'll need a boat to navigate it properly. You will recognize this area from The Rogue of Turtle Lake, a short story that is being released alongside this update (link below), or if you have watched my devlogs on my Youtube channel. I've hidden some new secrets, items, and challenges in the lake and the lands surrounding it.
The starting point of the adventure is also no longer just Oakhaven Square. You will now begin your journey on Mreska Road, a new area that leads into the familiar town.
You will also now find some strange monsters around this area. Things like Vapor Imps, Skincrawlers, Woodeaters, and some murderer with a creepy smile named Jeffery. Not sure how that guy got in here...
Short Story Release
Along with the update, I am releasing a short story called "The Rogue of Turtle Lake" which is set just before the events of this game. The story details some history of the new area expansion while giving more context to the world and events taking place within it.
The story is told through the perspective of Marla, a Catperson Rogue who is on the run after killing the Knight Commander of Eldoria. After reading the story, adventure around Turtle Lake in-game to uncover the next part of Marla's story.
But wait, there's more!
This overhaul has been a huge undertaking and it lays the foundation for future updates. That is why I am happy to announce this game will be relabeled to “in development” rather than “released.” There is so much more I want to do with this game than what I initially planned. It has morphed from simple adventure game with several rooms into an actual RPG with lore and a story.
Update 1.3 is now in the pre-development / planning phase. I have just started school for the semester but this has been nice to work on to de-stress. Better than playing BF2048 while I wait for BF6 to drop, but I digress.
Jump in, check out the new features, and explore the lake. Let me know what you think.
Peace and love to all (except Big Orange and his Citrus Boys),

Note: Do not feed the lake a glowing stone.
